It was familiar. I liked familiar. Familiar was good.

There wasn’t much in my life at that time that felt familiar. New job in a new state full of new people. All I wanted was to be back home—back where I knew or recognized almost everyone I saw around town and didn’t need to use my phone to get around town.

“Why, hello there,” I said and immediately wished I’d said something else.
